Job Description Job Description THOR Solutions is actively
seeking a highly motivated subject matter expert-level Naval
Architect with a focus on Structures to support the United States
Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC . An ideal
candidate will have significant prior experience with designing
structural and strength components for shipboard use, experience
with marine structural codes, and development and use of structural
analysis calculations in U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding
environments. Typical Responsibilities: Provide technical support
and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and
contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and
seakeeping properties. Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and
analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to
hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design. Develop
system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and
boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class
society standards. Conduct, witness, and document tests including
stability tests, speed, power, maneuvering, and seakeeping trials.
Provide leadership and coordinates review efforts for verification
and validation work for Structural related work efforts in the
Naval Architect discipline. Review design review comments submitted
by junior engineers and advise decisionmakers on considerations for
high impact and critical design review decisions. Provide
mentorship to junior naval architects related to the area of
shipboard Structurers design calculations and analyses. Location:
Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in
Washington, DC. Alternate telework schedules or work locations may
be considered for especially qualified candidates. Travel: Up to
10% travel is anticipated for ship checks. Typical Physical
Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment.
May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to
waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing
shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or
vision. Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this
position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 – 150,000.
Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors
including education, qualifications, and experience. US Citizenship
Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this
position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will
be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment. Security
Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret
security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already
possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred);
OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire. Required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Bachelor’s degree in Naval
Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a
marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. At least
fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture.
Overall experience should include: At least ten (10) years of
documented experience with designing structural and strength
components for shipboard use, experience with marine structural
codes, and development and use of structural analysis calculations.
Experience providing leadership and coordinating review efforts for
verification and validation work for Structural related work
efforts in the Naval Architect discipline. Reviewing design review
comments submitted by junior engineers and advising decisionmakers
on considerations for high impact and critical design review
decisions. Providing mentorship to junior naval architects related
to the area of shipboard Structurers design calculations and
analyses. At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S.
Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs
required. Experience with naval architecture software solving
complex problems regarding hull design. Experience with corrosion
principles of metals for surface assets and boats. Knowledge of
USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and
regulations. Proficient with common productivity software. Strong
communications skills. Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities: Master’s degree in Naval Architecture or another
relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an
ABET-accredited institution. Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS
Level I shipbuilding programs. Relevant certifications, such as:
Professional Engineer (PE) license. Project Management Professional
(PMP) certification. DHS Systems Engineering certification. DHS
