Responsible to the Unit Manager for the overall nursing practice of
the unit during the shift assigned. In the absence of the Unit
Manager, the RN is responsible to the Nursing Supervisor, Charge
Nurse or the Nursing House Supervisor of the shift. Provides
professional nursing care based on current nursing knowledge
through use of the nursing process. This includes the
responsibility for assessment of the patient's needs, development
of the plan of care to meet those needs, implementation of nursing
measures and evaluation of the effectiveness of the nursing care
and other treatment measures. Responsibilities: Collects patient
health data by prioritizing data collection based on the patient's
immediate condition or needs. Documents relevant data in a
retrievable form and involves the patient, significant others, and
other health care providers in data collection. Analyzes assessment
data in determining diagnoses and documents them in a manner that
facilitates the determination of expected outcomes and plan of
care. Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient
that are attainable and directed toward providing continuity of
care. Develops a plan of care that prescribes interventions
individualized to meet the patient's developmental and health
status needs. Implements the interventions identified in the plan
of care in a safe and appropriate manner. Evaluates the patient's
progress toward attainment of outcomes using a systematic and
ongoing process. Systematically evaluates the quality and
effectiveness of nursing practice by participating in quality of
care activities. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in
nursing practice by participating in ongoing educational
activities. Collaborates with the patient, significant others, and
health care providers in providing patient care and consulting as
needed. Uses research findings in practice by participating in
research activities and using research findings in the development
of policies. Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness,
and cost in planning and delivering patient care. Demonstrates
leadership skills by prioritizing and delegating unit and patient
care activities. Meets the specialty standards of nursing practice
