Position Overview
A Neonatology Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is an
advanced practice registered nurse specializing in the care of
newborns, particularly premature, critically ill, and
high-risk infants. NNPs primarily work in Neonatal
Intensive Care Units (NICUs), providing life-saving
medical care in collaboration with neonatologists and
multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities Patient Assessment &
Diagnosis
- Perform comprehensive physical assessments of neonates
(including preterm and critically ill infants)
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic neonatal conditions such
as:
- Respiratory distress syndrome
- Neonatal infections/sepsis
- Congenital abnormalities
- Prematurity-related complications
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood gases,
imaging, lab work)
Clinical Management
- Develop and implement individualized care plans for
neonates
- Manage ventilators and other life-support systems
- Prescribe medications, fluids, and nutritional support
(including TPN)
- Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patient
condition
Procedures
- Perform specialized neonatal procedures such as:
- Intubation and airway management
- Umbilical line placement (arterial and venous)
- Lumbar punctures
- Chest tube placement
- Assist with resuscitation during high-risk deliveries
Delivery Room & Emergency Care
- Attend high-risk births and provide immediate newborn care
- Lead or assist in neonatal resuscitation efforts
- Stabilize critically ill infants for transfer if needed
Family Support & Education
- Educate and counsel parents regarding their infant s condition
and treatment
- Provide emotional support during critical or end-of-life
situations
- Involve families in care planning and discharge
preparation
Collaboration & Care Coordination
- Work closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses,
respiratory therapists, and other specialists
- Coordinate care across departments and during transitions
(e.g., NICU to home)
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate, detailed patient records
- Follow hospital protocols, safety standards, and regulatory
guidelines
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications
- Master s or Doctorate degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP)
- Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
(NNP-BC)
- Current RN and APRN licensure
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic
Life Support (BLS) (as required)
