Business Unit Director- Device Connector JOB TITLE: Director Americas Business Unit, Device Connectors


The Director of the DC RBUs is the overall leader of three Regional Business Units tasked to develop and implement a vision which supports the Global DC Business Area’s strategy. Success is measured by completing development projects resulting in profitable growth within the Phoenix Contact Group, an effective production of DC products in North America and a strong collaboration with the American sales units in order to push and pull market intelligence and there with secure market (share) expansion. This individual will guide leaders in new product creation through the entire product lifecycle process, generating new products recognized and approved by HQ BU´s as significant in the industries targeted. These product development plans are measured to the time frame, cost and quality agreed to at the start of each program. Each of the RBUs will support at least one global product line in addition to providing customer specific solutions, support of value add and variant development of existing products which are developed and/or produced at other locations in the Phoenix Contact group. The resources within each RBU consists of Product Management, Development Engineering and Production Departments incl. Quality- and Industrial Engineering function. This leader needs to recruit, develop and retain inspired people to meet the unit’s objectives. The ability to develop and cultivate relationships with the BUs at Headquarters, within the sales- and production organizations throughout the global organization as well as suppliers both internal and out is essential.



• Develop a vision and strategy for the DC Regional Business Unit(s) in line and in cooperation with the Business Unit headquarters location.

• Provide leadership to DC RBU,

• Provide business initiative proposals to the BUs at HQ

• Empowers, selects, coaches, and retains qualified staff that will contribute to unit goals and the company at large.

• Lead all engineering, product management, and production operations of the DC Regional Business Unit.

• Manage the product life cycle for a select group of product lines in each Business Unit(s).

• Provide direction to the leaders developing solutions for (customized) products building these where it makes the most commercial impact.

• Create and implement variants for customers or markets producing with direction of the global product management location

• Full P&L responsibility for the Device Connector’s Regional Business Units.

• Prepare and manage annually a budget for each of the operating departments which make up the Regional Business Units.

• Coordinate and implement a product roadmap in collaboration with business unit headquarters and in reference to the global strategic development plan (SDP)

• Provide strategic input acquired from the region to the business unit as needed and when requested for strategic planning sessions hosted by the headquarter business unit.

• Identify relevant technologies and coordinate necessary technology projects with headquarters technology development resources,

• Support Quality initiatives

• Identify product opportunities that fill gaps, take advantage of regional customer specific needs, technology specific requirements, standards specific issues or providers of technology within the region.

• Qualify the resources and metrics required to ensure financial and market success for proposed products or concepts.

• Lead the implementation of the development project discipline and manage the lifecycle of the RBU originated products.

• Direct and manage the engineering resources available to the unit.

• Create programs which include continuous improvement of the units outputs based on measured data.

• Launch products to other regional business units and subsidiaries within the business unit’s geography.

• Travel to industry events, customers and subsidiaries throughout the America’s region and global product manager’s meeting to obtain data and support product launches.

• Develop and implement with the assistance of the Headquarter business unit manufacturing and sourcing of the articles managed in the Regional Business Unit.

• Manufacture products in the most efficient process possible while meeting the Phoenix Contact Group quality levels.

• Specify, propose and procure manufacturing equipment and materials to meet production schedules and quality standards.

• Develop systems and continuous improvement programs which results in improved quality and performance to customer’s delivery expectations.

• 30 % travel to be expected

• Collaborate with sales subsidiaries in the Americas and occasionally the world to find new technologies, qualify and support RBU developed concepts or products for deployment into these market areas.

• Take an active role in supporting the sales functions in the Americas with technical- and product knowledge.

• Participate in industry events and industry associations.

• Demonstrate initiative by understanding what actions need to be taken and completing the required tasks while seeking the perspective of others as required.

• Demonstrate an honest and forthright presence by taking responsibility for own mistakes and not blaming others, and by doing what he / she commits to doing.

• Work as a team player to make a difference within the business and express gratitude and appreciation to others who have provided information, assistance or support.

• Readily handle change through taking advantage of lifelong learning opportunities and being open minded and curious in the face of new challenges.


• Bachelor of Science degree in a technical field with at least 10 years of related industry experience or general college degree with at least fifteen years of industry experience.

• Master of Business Administration, or at least five years of product or engineering management experience.

• 10 – 15 years of experience in engineering, marketing, sales, or product management with a minimum of 7 years of management experience.

• Proven ability to lead multi-disciplined teams in an international business environment

• Knowledge of project and product management procedures and the proven ability to implement

• In depth working knowledge of electrical connector products and related technologies, products and technology of the business unit represented.

• Display high proficiency levels of Leadership Principles

• Excellent demonstrated leadership abilities


• Must be able to travel by air for trips up to 12 hours.

• Must be able to ride in a car for 4 hours at a time.

• Must be able to work at a desk with a computer for up to eight hours per day.
